Friday Favorites

Happy Friday!

It’s been a busy week! I started doing some freelance writing and editing, and I’m driving almost 3 hours away for a job interview/meeting this morning. It’s going to be a long day – but hopefully a productive one!

Here are some things I enjoyed online this week:

I plan to spend the weekend watching The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu and working on some blog posts for May! Oh, and brainstorming things to do on my next vacation (which isn’t happening soon enough!).

What are your plans for this weekend?

Time for this week’s Friday Favorites!

It’s been a very long week, and I’m glad to spend the weekend catching up on my meditation practice, spend time with family, and celebrate the return of Chelsea Handler’s show on Netflix. I also plan to eat as many chocolate eggs as I can stuff in me! Here are a few of my favorite things from this past week:

I hope everyone has a fun and sunny Easter weekend!

Friday Favorites: Fall is Here

Friday Favorites Fall

Happy Friday everyone!

This week has been so much better. I’m finally over being sick, the weather cooled off, and the leaves seemed to change overnight. Fall is officially here, and I’m excited to get out and enjoy it!

Since I haven’t done a Friday Favorites in a few weeks, I thought I’d share some things I’ve been loving online since then:

I’m looking forward to spending the weekend hiking, enjoying the cool weather and changing colors. It’s also football season, so I will hopefully get some time to read more too. There is nothing like getting cozy with a book, am I right?

What are your plans this weekend? How have you been ringing in fall where you live?

Friday Favorites: Spring is Coming

spring is coming

Taken while out hiking this week! Spring is coming!

Happy Friday!

It has been unseasonably warm around here this week, and it’s been great to go hiking and see things starting to sprout! Sure, it means seasonal allergies are on their way, but so are flowers, and I can’t wait to see some more bright, fun color outside!

Before I head off to do some thrifting, packing, and figure out what we’re having for dinner tonight, I wanted to share what I’ve been enjoying around the internet this week!

  • Man Repeller posed an important question for the fashion and blogging industries alike – is “street style” on its way out? While I agree it’s still around and going strong, it ruins the experience for me when I know who most of the people are. I loved street style because it was about how non-industry (or new to the industry) people were dressing and interpreting trends, but now some of these people have made careers out of being street style gurus…and that kinda ruins it for me. The comment section on this post is just as important to read as the post itself – they started an interesting conversation!
  • If I’m being totally honest, I’ve been trying to eat healthier lately and it sucks – mostly because I really don’t like salads. The Chalkboard Mag is trying to win me over, though, with their article, “10 Salad Recipes That Aren’t Boring.” I might have to give a few of these a try next week, and we’ll see if they converted me to at least tolerating salads!
  • The other struggle I’m facing while eating healthier is that I love baking, but baking means making huge portions of things that are generally not considered healthy (especially when it means a whole cake for only two people). The Pioneer Woman has my back, though, with a “Chocolate Cake in a Mug” recipe that’s the perfect size for when you want to indulge, but not get stuck eating a whole cake by yourself. I’m totally going to give this one a try soon – I’ve been craving something bad, and it’s better if I indulge a little before I go bonkers and try my hand at making a whole cheesecake….
  • I recently bought the Thayer’s Rose Witch Hazel Toner, and the stuff is changing my skin for the better, especially after a sweaty workout! If you’re more into making your own, The Chalkboard Mag has a great recipe for their own post-workout Rose + Witch Hazel Face Wipes. They would make a great gift, or fit perfectly into your gym bag to freshen up after a long workout (or just on a hot day…which I promise are coming back soon).
  • If you’re looking for a good snack for Oscar night, check out Everyday Food’s YouTube video on how to make three amazing (and easy) versions of baked chicken wings. They sound yummy, and perfect for a night of lounging around and watching the show!

Alright, there you have it! I hope everyone has a great weekend, and I’m looking forward to hearing what you’ve been loving online this week, so leave a comment with suggestions of things I should check out!

Life Lately

Life Lately

Happy Monday!

Last week was a long, dreary one (thanks to a rainy PNW winter), and I’m happy to be starting Monday off on a much better foot…if that makes any sense. Here’s a little taste of what I was up to last week:

  • Started off the week feeling like I was catching a cold, so of course I picked up some wine to help fight it off (antioxidants, amiright?). Not sure it worked…haha…but it was a great bottle of wine that paired nicely with Ree Drummond’s Roasted Butternut Squash Salad and steak!
  • After getting one of the worst breakouts I’ve had in years, I hit up Amazon for some skincare magic. It turns out something in my multivitamin was causing it, so goodbye vitamins…and hello to Thayers Rose Petal Witch Hazel. This stuff smells amazing and really does the job! I’m also loving the Embryolisse Lait-creme Concentre, and the OGX Argan Oil Body Lotion
I’ve used for years (I think I’m on my 4th or 5th bottle). My skin is much happier now from head to toe!
  • To help bring some cheer into such a grey and rainy week, I decided to do some thrifting. I came home with a few silk scarves and some new handbags that are perfect for spring. I can’t wait to share them with you when the sun comes back out and I can photograph them!

Here are a few other things I enjoyed online over the past week, if you need a bit of a mid-day distraction. Hope you are having a great start to your week!

  • Here is a list of 10 “little-known” beauty products with amazing reviews on Amazon. I’ve heard of most of these, but I was interested to see a $40 straightening iron that outclassed most $200 versions! (Byrdie)
  • Man Repeller’s review of the J. Crew Fall/Winter ’16 show has the perfect slideshow to get you ready for spring. I know, the clothes are fall/winter, but the colors are straight springtime! (Man Repeller)
  • If you’re like me, and shudder at the thought of staying at a crap hotel near your alma mater, check out this video on “graduate hotels.” A design company is turning crappy, outdated college area hotels into amazing, luxurious, and nostalgic experiences for returning alumni. I’d gladly visit my old college stomping grounds more if I knew I could stay in one of these, rather than a seedy motel! (Goop)
  • The Savannah College of Art & Design recently unveiled a project that turned unused parking spaces in a parking garage into functional, beautiful micro-living spaces for college students. They are looking at solutions for cities dealing with housing shortages, and found that while there often isn’t space for housing, there are 5 parking spots for every 1 car in the U.S., which means precious land in our major U.S. cities often sits empty. Living so close to Seattle, I know firsthand how tough it is to find any housing…let alone decent housing within a realistic budget. I’m excited to see where this project leads, to be honest! Friday Favorites: Fall Cleaning

Friday Favorites Fall Cleaning

For most of us, fall is the beginning of a new (school) year, and we gravitate toward the changing season with renewed focus and energy. I chose to pour my “new year” energy into doing some cleaning and organizing this week.

One afternoon I dedicated to going through my beauty products, updating things for the fall/winter seasons, and storing or tossing things I won’t need until next summer. If you haven’t done it yet, I highly recommend going through your stash and getting rid of things that are old, outdated, expired, or just no longer loved. It’s not only good for your actual health (two year old mascara is just asking to give you pink eye), but it’s good for your mental health, too. After a thorough clean of the apartment yesterday, I rewarded myself with some time outside on our patio…since it won’t be warm enough to do that for a long, long time!

Anyhoo, here are some things I have been enjoying this week on the internet!

  • Jamie Beck did an amazing review of Le Bristol Hotel in Paris, and now I’m fully convinced that, in full Liz Lemon fashion, “I want to go to there.” Like right now. Just hop on a plane and be there.
  • Part 2 of Alexa Chung’s documentary on the fashion industry came out this week, and is still making me bang my head against the wall that I didn’t go into fashion. I can’t design, sew, draw, or look good in clothes…but it turns out you don’t have to!
  • World of Wanderlust’s “A Quick Guide to Krakow” just made me add Poland to my travel bucket list. Having a Polish background helps, but who knew it could be such a nice, easy place to travel? Not me, that’s for sure!
  • I really, really want to try the Famous Chocolate Cupcakes recipe from A Cup of Jo because it looks insanely easy and very tasty! Unfortunately, my husband is on a self-imposed diet, so there will be no cupcakes in my life anytime soon. Apparently no dessert for him means no dessert for me, unless it’s something I know he won’t eat. I wonder if I can work in some hazelnuts….
  • Man Repeller’s Leandra Medine interviewed Stacy London recently for their Chatroom series, but this week she released an extended version as a podcast. I am looking forward to listening to the entire thing this afternoon while cozying up with some banana bread and a tea (so I lied about not baking…I’m PMS-ing hardcore and couldn’t take it anymore…husband’s diet be damned).

I hope everyone has a nice, relaxing weekend! It sounds like everyone who was eyeballs deep in Fashion Week might need a couple days of sleeping in, eating on a regular schedule, and a good foot massage – all of which I hope you get!

Hair Color by Sign?

Hair Color by Sign?

Since many of us enjoy reading horoscopes (or Repell-o-Scopes, thanks to Man Repeller), when I found out  Madison Reed was offering people their very own Hair-o-Scope, I was curious.

Of course, I’m not someone who puts much into horoscopes, but I think they’re fun to read. I also wanted to know if my recent choice to go blonde-ish was a good one (I’m still on the fence about it). They hit the nail on the head about my wanting to change up my color a lot – I’m already considering heading back to brown, or reddish brown (if I can get away with it without my redheaded husband noticing…he’s very against my going red…sigh).

Madison Reed is a mail-order hair color service that is hoping to change the way we see and treat our hair. Their products are cruelty-free and free of ammonia, resorcinol, PPD, and added parabens, which equates to healthier hair, better color, and no horrible smell. Partners and roommates the world over should enjoy that last part!

They also offer consultation services, from their Color Advisor quiz to speaking with a professional colorist, to ensure that you’ll love the color they send. After you take the quiz or talk to a colorist, you can choose which color you want, and decide whether you want one kit ($24.95 each), or a subscription to have the color sent to you on a regular basis (every 2-12 weeks at $19.95 each).

If $25 seems like a lot for an at-home hair kit, you should check out what each one comes with – seriously, they’ve thought of almost everything. My biggest pet peeve with dying my hair at home is having to put the dirty gloves back on to rinse off the dye in the shower – which is why their kit comes with 2 pairs! They also include things like barrier cream, a cleansing cloth, and protective cap – seriously, they left no stone unturned.

After spending a lot of time on their site, it seems like a great service at an amazing price. I’ve seen other mail-order services that cost a lot more, and don’t offer the one-on-one consultations (unless you’re paying for the premium service or something). I also really like that you can subscribe at whatever rate you want, which is great if you dye your hair frequently…or not so much.

So if you’re tired of paying out the nose for professional color, or hate picking between the 4 options you have at the store, definitely check out Madison Reed. You can also follow them on Twitter at @madisonreedllb if you want more updates on what they’re up to!

Friday Favorites: Happy 4th of July!

Friday Favorites: Happy 4th of July!
Taken on my trip to Mt. Rushmore last year

After an exciting first week here at Afternoon Glow, I’m off to enjoy my holiday weekend! Hopefully we can find a decent place to see fireworks this year that isn’t too busy! If you live in the Seattle/Bellevue area, leave a comment if you have advice on where to go see some great fireworks without too much hassle!

Before I head off, I’ll leave you with some fun links to get you through the long weekend:

It’s the end of an era – Apartment Therapy reports that Lucky magazine has stopped their print magazine.

For those of you going through Game of Thrones withdrawal already (I know I am), GoEuro shows you vacation options for some of the locations where it’s shot. Some of the places include Spain, Malta, and Croatia!
