HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Whether you’re all dressed up at work, handing out treats at home, or just eating your weight in candy while watching scary movies, I hope you have a Happy Halloween!

Make sure to check out my post on my favorite Halloween movies if you need some suggestions!

I’ll probably be out trick-or-treating with my nephews, as I do every year. Thankfully they’re pretty cool kids, and usually end up sharing some candy with me after the night’s over – and not just the gross stuff, either!

What I look forward to the most every year is actually tomorrow – all that candy goes on clearance! Time to stock up on candy corn, mini candy bars, and my all-time favorite peanut butter cups!

I hope everyone has a spooky (and safe) Halloween!

Friday Favorites: Halloween Movies!

Happy Friday!

Can you believe October’s almost over?! This past month flew by so fast for me. Between work, getting outside as much as possible, and chugging homemade Pumpkin Spiced Lattes, it was a busy month! I’m looking forward November this year, and brainstorming what I want to make for Thanksgiving this year (and maybe doing some test runs…yum).

Instead of sharing my favorites from the web this week, I thought I’d get into the Halloween spirit and share my favorite spooky movies! I don’t like traditional “horror” movies, but I do enjoy a lot of the funnier ones out there. Here are just a few to get you in the Halloween mood – and get a good laugh in, too!

Nosferatu (1922)

Screw Twilight – if you want a truly terrifying vampire movie, turn out all the lights, bundle up under the blankets, and put this one on. It’s old, dark, and super creepy. Bram Stoker’s Dracula was one of my favorite books as a kid, and this is a pretty close remake of it (in fact, Stoker’s family won a lawsuit over it).

Beetlejuice (1988)

I grew up watching the cartoon version of Beetlejuice, so it’s not surprise I enjoy the movie too! Michael Keaton is cheesy AF, but in the best way possible. You also get to see Alec Baldwin when he was, as Tina Fey puts it in 30 Rock, “in the bubble.” My nephew watched it when he was 4 and loved it, so I’d say it’s pretty safe to put this one on after trick or treating with the kids!

Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds (1963)

It wouldn’t be a Halloween movie list without at least one Hitchcock movie, right? I once showed it as part of a Halloween-themed teaching unit at a high school, and my students loved it. If you’re looking for something scary, but not gory, I’d go with this one!

Young Frankenstein (1974)

If you’re looking to laugh, definitely throw this movie on! You can’t go wrong with a Mel Brooks movie if you want a fun take on a classic story! You’ll be quoting this movie long after it’s over!

The Cabin in the Woods (2012)

My husband recently insisted I watch this movie, and I think it’s a totally underrated scary movie! If you’re anywhere near my age, and enjoyed “self-aware” horror movies like Scream, Scary Movie, and I Know What You Did Last Summer, this is right up your alley. It’s your typical “teens go to a cabin in the woods, and scary shit ensues,” but with a fun twist. I can’t tell you much more about it – just go watch it!

What We Do in the Shadows (2014)

The guys behind Flight of the Concords made a vampire mock-umentary. I really can’t say much more about it without ruining all the fun. It’s hilarious, weird and kinda heartwarming. A great movie to watch with friends, while chomping on some Halloween candy (or weed candy, if you’re into that sort of thing).

Welcome to October!

Welcome to October

October is here, and I can’t be happier about it!

Frankly, last month sucked. I was sick for most of it and am still not totally back to normal. Dealing with daily construction on our apartment building isn’t helping, either. It’s so hard to think straight with people hammering on your walls and shouting at each other all day long. I managed to get out more once I felt healthy, but even then it wasn’t enough.

Since I have a lot of work to catch up on, I’m going to take this week off of blogging. I need to focus on kicking this cold/allergy/stress thing once and for all, and work on some blog-related things I didn’t get to while I was ill. Hell, Friday was the first time I vacuumed in almost a month – and it was so needed!

I hope everyone has a great week, and I’ll see you back here next week!

Friday Favorites: Welcome to October!

Loving all the sunshine this week while out hiking!

Welcome to October!

If September was all about renewed energy and work ethic, October is about building on that while also finding time to get cozy and comfortable. The weather in Seattle through September was unusually warm, so it didn’t feel like fall was coming at all – but this week it has definitely cooled off and feels more autumnal. I also started off October with a cold, so I’m forcing myself to stay home and chill out a bit more. I’m looking forward to the leaves changing color, breaking out my scarves (finally!), and everything pumpkin spiced!

Here are some things I’ve been enjoying this past week:

  • Apartment Therapy reminded us that while the holidays are a few months away, it’s never to soon to start planning. They give amazing advice for those who like giving homemade, handmade, or trendy gifts each year (hint: plan way ahead!).
  • If you wear heels, check out this YouTube video from Chriselle Lim for “5 Heel Hacks” to make sure your feet stay healthy and happy!
  • To make sure you don’t miss this year’s fall foliage, check out the Fall Foliage Map to find out when the peak days for getting out to see the fall leaves!
  • Lenny Letter No. 1 launched this week! Sign up on their website for the newsletter, and enjoy!

Now I’m off to find some spiced doughnuts and apple cider. Have a great weekend!
