Beauty DIY Face Elixir Spray

Living on a budget often means giving up your favorite luxury products. One I miss terribly is Caudalie’s Beauty Elixir. It doesn’t do much for my skin, per se, but I love the relaxing, clean smell. At almost $50 per bottle, it’s an expense I can’t justify to myself.

Recently, I researched to see if I could make a face elixir spray comes close to the original. After looking at ingredients in the original elixir, I went to Whole Foods in search of the ingredients.

I am new to using essential oils, so I started with the main scents (rosemary, lavender, rose, & peppermint). I could go back and add the pricier oils later, but that defeats the purpose of a budget-friendly DIY. I spent around $30 on the ingredients, which will yield enough face elixir to last years.

After playing around with the recipe, I found a ratio of essential oils to come close to the original elixir’s scent. The rosemary scent is key – as soon as I took a whiff of it in Whole Foods, I knew that was likely the main ingredient in the Caudalie version. You can play around with the ratio based on what you like – just go easy on the peppermint. It can be irritating to your skin and eyes if spraying directly on your face.

Beauty DIY: Face Elixir Spray

Ingredients:

Small glass spray bottle

Spring or distilled water

Thayers Alcohol-Free Rose Petal Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera

Essential Oils*: Lavender, Rosemary, Peppermint, & Grapeseed

Directions:

  1. Fill your glass bottle 2/3 of the way with water. Add the rose toner until it almost reaches the top.
  2. Add your essential oils: 10 drops each of grapeseed, rosemary, and lavender; 5 drops of peppermint (You can always play around with this ratio – perhaps start with 5 each and go from there!)
  3. Place the cap onto the bottle, give it a good shake, and spray!

This oil isn’t just good for the face – I use it as a room spray, aromatherapy spray, and fabric freshener. Just go light on fabrics, since there is oil in it!

*Caudalie’s spray also includes essential oils like myrrh, wild/bitter orange, neroli, rose and others. They’re super expensive, and I’m not sure they add much to their spray anyway. I got around using rose essential oil by having it in the toner. If you use a regular witch hazel toner, add some rose oil.

Falling in Love with Whole Foods

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but it took me until now to set foot in a Whole Foods. Yep, at 33 years old, I finally went there.

I’ve lived in Seattle for two years, and I’m finally coming around to the idea that Whole Foods may have more to offer than overpriced produce. While I usually preferred Trader Joe’s, I thought it was time to see what Whole Foods had to offer.

On a cloudy day in August, I drove to my local Whole Foods. By local, I mean a 20-minute drive through soul-crushing traffic. Not sure I’ll make that trek very often, but hey, it’s technically “in town.”

My first impression of Whole Foods was a pretty good one. For one thing, the prices for food were close to the chain grocery stores. Of course, if you’re going for small-batch, pretentiously organic, blessed-by-a-shaman kind of stuff, it’ll cost you – but that’s expected. I even tried out their lunch buffet, and came home with tasty nachos and this vegan almond-chocolate thumbprint cookie that was…pretty amazing.

I initially went to check out their essential oils for a project, and was impressed by both the prices and selection. Also, I grabbed the latest issue of Thrive, a vegan food and lifestyle magazine, and a couple candles from a local company called Big Dipper Wax Works. The magazine gave me a few new recipes to try, and while the candles weren’t blessed by a shaman, they smell pretty damn good.

In the end, I have to say I would happily return to Whole Foods if I was on the hunt for something specific. I’m not sure I’ll go there on a regular basis (mostly because of that damn traffic), but it’s a nice place to go when I want to switch up my routine!

Chopped Salad / Vietnamese Pork Soup / Pasta with Chicken and Zucchini / Oven-Roasted Ribs and Corn on the Cob

August was a challenging month for cooking. D decided to go low-carb, and wasn’t digging meat most of the month. Since I do the cooking, it’s my job to figure dinners out for him that meet those requirements (lucky me). Thankfully, it was hot as balls all month, so we ate a lot of salads or veggie-heavy meals. The ribs were a major success, and the first time I did them in an oven.

I didn’t get out hiking as much as I wanted to in August, thanks to the crazy temperatures. It is cooling off finally, and I will hopefully get out more in September. In addition to exploring some new trails, I found a few places that I can go to write or chill out this fall when I need to get outside.

Coffee-fueled work session / First trip to Whole Foods ever / Re-potting plants / Trying new things…

After a bit of an un-motivated July, I took my time in August to get life back in order and get out of the house more. I found a great coffee shop to work in, got some chores done around the house, and hauled myself to a Whole Foods just to check things out. Oh, and the candy is because D was shocked I never had a Chick-o-Stick before (it was…kinda gross). It turns out there are a lot of candies I never had before. I guess I was more sheltered as a child than I thought (just kidding).
