#NoSpendNovember: Fun + Free Ideas!

Photo by Drew Geraets on Unsplash

One of the biggest challenges for me during #NoSpendNovember is to find things to do that are free – and fun!

I work mainly from home, and it’s important to find things to do outside the house. I enjoy being able to work in my pajamas, but it does get old after a bit. Most of the time, I leave my weekly shopping trips to during the week, and use that as an excuse to get out. When the weather’s nice, I make a trip to my local park for a hike. It’s tempting to hit Target on the way home, though!

We’re almost halfway through the challenge right now, and I’m sure some of you are struggling to find things to do like me! Today I wanted to share a few things I’m doing that are fun, free ideas to keep busy!

#NoSpendNovember: Fun + Free Ideas

Idea #1: Get outside!

Instead of spending time walking through the mall, get out and enjoy some fresh air! Go on a walk through your neighborhood and enjoy all the fall colors and home decor. If you’re lucky to live somewhere with a great parks system (like me!), take advantage of all they have to offer! Part of my #NoSpendNovember challenge is to unplug more often, and getting outside helps. It’s also a great way to get some free exercise!

Idea #2: Get sweaty for free!

If you typically spend money to work out, whether it’s a gym membership or online streaming program, consider the free options out there! Instead of paying for group yoga classes this month, try out Yoga With Adriene on YouTube. She has 30-day programs, beginner lessons, meditation practices, and more advanced stuff too! I’m also a big fan of Blogilates, Popsugar, and Tone It Up on YouTube as well!

Idea #3: Curl up with a good book!

Now that it’s getting cold outside, there is nothing quite like curling up under a blanket with a book and a cup of tea. Check out my earlier post on how to read for free, grab a book or ebook, and get reading!

Idea #4: Clean & declutter your space!

Part of the reason many of us do #NoSpendNovember is to deal with just how much stuff we really need in our lives. Instead of spending your Saturday morning thrift shopping (like I often do), work on cleaning up your space. Give the bathroom a good scrub down, shred old paperwork you no longer need, and reorganize your sock drawer. A clean, simplified space can be calming and soothing – something we all could use more of these days!

Idea #5: Give back!

In addition to donating old clothes or home goods, consider giving away some of your time as well! Volunteering is a great way to spend some time making new friends, staying busy, and having a positive impact on your community. There are so many ways to volunteer, from tutoring students, cooking for the homeless, cleaning up your local park, or even cuddling puppies at your local shelter!

I hope everyone is having a great time with their #NoSpendNovember challenges! If you have any other great ideas for fun + free ideas, leave a comment below!

Favorite Blogs + YouTube Channels

favorite blogs youtube channels(Me watching “Getting Doug with High” on YouTube…while probably high…and eating Oreos.)

After taking a long break from reading magazines and blogs, I got back into it this summer. Writing a blog makes it tough to read them sometimes. It’s that whole “knowing how the sausage is made” issue. Many blogs became a string of sponsored posts and advertisements, and I gave up on those. Others changed their content drastically after having kids, a topic I have no interest or relation to. I typically read my blogs through Bloglovin’, and after doing a “clean-out,” got rid of almost 2/3 of the blogs in my feed – and I don’t miss a single one.

I also got back into watching YouTube again, and found a few channels I really like. YouTube is another place where I kind of lost interest, but thankfully there are people out there putting out amazing new shit every day!

Here are just a few of the blogs and YouTube channels I’m digging lately. Enjoy!

Blogs I’m Loving Lately

Hello Glow

I am on a DIY-beauty kick lately, and Hello Glow has been a great resource for my newfound hobby! Stephanie has recipes for DIY sugar scrub, eye masks, rosewater, and much more. Her site also has great posts on essential oils, food recipes, and overall wellness. If you want to learn more about wellness, this is a great site to start with!

The Chalkboard Mag

If you want to dive a little deeper into the spiritual and wellness world, check out Pressed Juicery‘s blog, The Chalkboard Mag. I love reading the refrigerator tours of course – because #nutritiongoals. They also have articles like what the upcoming solar eclipse means for your wellness journey, the best organic bed sheets, and Nauli (the weirdest yoga move I’ve ever seen). The site is a little more hardcore than Hello Glow, but it has a ton of useful information!

Because Im Addicted

After Geri Hirsch left LEAFtv, she decided to revamp her blog – and I am all about it! She encourages her readers to try her Wellness Challenges, which are (usually) simple tasks aimed at making us happier and healthier. Her healthy recipes are another reason I keep coming back. They are all super healthy and easy to make! I can’t wait to see her blog grow over the coming months!

Man Repeller

Man Repeller is a blog I come back to from time to time when I need some fashun and snark in my life. They were the first to inform me that low-rise jeans are coming back (gross), and that I’m not the only one who thinks quinoa is a load of crap (also gross). I also recently read that yellow is now the new “Millennial Pink,” which is great because I might be one of the few people who can pull off bright yellow.

YouTube Channels I’m Loving Lately

The Sorry Girls

If you are a DIY fan like me, definitely check out The Sorry Girls, a Canadian duo that have some of the coolest tutorials out there. Everything they do is totally #pinterestgoals, from their midcentury plant stand to their amazing DIY Halloween costumes! I know Halloween is a couple months away, but if you’re like me and always wait until the last minute, their site is full of last-minute ideas!

The Lo Down

Yes, I used to watch Laguna Beach and The Hills obsessively when I was in college. It’s no surprise that when I heard Lo Bosworth started her own YouTube channel, called The Lo Down, I subscribed immediately. She has great videos on skincare, wellness, recipes (she went to culinary school, after all), and her battle with depression. If you’re looking for videos that sound more like you’re chatting with your best friend who has all the right answers, check her out!

Lisa Eldridge

If you don’t know how to do your makeup, or always wanted to learn how to master the illusive cat eye, go here. Seriously. She will change your whole life. I started watching her videos before my wedding 6 years ago, and I’m still watching. Lisa’s relaxing voice is mind-numbingly amazing, and her tutorials are totally do-able for most people. My makeup skills improved a ton after watching her videos – and yours will too!

LEAF

I wasn’t sure what would happen to this channel after its two founding members, Geri Hirsch and Erin Falconer, left the brand. It took them a while to find their footing, but the new LEAF channel (short for living, eating, and fashion) has become a new favorite. I’m enjoying their #WakeUpWith series, and the longer videos in general! I’m glad LEAF is living on with new creators and great new ideas!

Happy Friday!

It’s been a busy week! I started doing some freelance writing and editing, and I’m driving almost 3 hours away for a job interview/meeting this morning. It’s going to be a long day – but hopefully a productive one!

Here are some things I enjoyed online this week:

I plan to spend the weekend watching The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu and working on some blog posts for May! Oh, and brainstorming things to do on my next vacation (which isn’t happening soon enough!).

What are your plans for this weekend?

Happy Friday!

I hope everyone is enjoying the lovely spring weather all around the country this week! It was nice to ditch the sweaters for a few days, but alas, we’re back to chilly temperatures for a while.

Here are a few things I enjoyed online this week:

  • Chelsea Clinton was a guest writer this week on Well + Good, where she discussed the importance of talking about periods and breastfeeding, and how both of those things make it tough for women to succeed all over the world. A great read if you are interested in the recent news from states who are finally ending unfair taxes on women’s hygiene products! (Well + Good)
  • I guess in his new-found spare time, Barack Obama has become another Instagram husband. Man Repeller has determined he’s pretty damn good at it, too. (Man Repeller)
  • Apparently jaw tension can cause breakouts? Great. Add it to the list of things I need to stop doing, from eating dairy to letting my face rest of anything while I sleep. (The Chalkboard Mag)
  • I’ve gotten hooked on watching The Sorry Girls, a DIY duo from Canada, on YouTube. They started out mainly doing DIY Halloween costumes, but branched out into tons of other cool things. Definitely check them out if you want to learn some cheap and easy tricks to update your space! (The Sorry Girls)
  • Now that LeafTV is officially sold off, Geri Hirsch is now blogging full-time at because im addicted! Check out the blog for even more amazing content for the lifestyle junkies out there. This week she came up with a comprehensive spring cleaning list that anyone can conquer! (because im addicted)
  • I’ll file this one away for whenever I’m back to living on my own, because lord knows I’ll never get my parents to try these! Check out Hello Glow’s 5 vegan macaroni and cheese recipes – they all look amazing! (Hello Glow)

I hope you all have a great weekend! I’m planning to catch up with some friends who are visiting BG, and working on some more blog posts for you in the near future!

Friday Favorites: Fall is Here

Friday Favorites Fall

Happy Friday everyone!

This week has been so much better. I’m finally over being sick, the weather cooled off, and the leaves seemed to change overnight. Fall is officially here, and I’m excited to get out and enjoy it!

Since I haven’t done a Friday Favorites in a few weeks, I thought I’d share some things I’ve been loving online since then:

I’m looking forward to spending the weekend hiking, enjoying the cool weather and changing colors. It’s also football season, so I will hopefully get some time to read more too. There is nothing like getting cozy with a book, am I right?

What are your plans this weekend? How have you been ringing in fall where you live?

Friday Favorites: Happy Birthday Edition!

Friday Favorites Happy Birthday Edition

Me with my little sister, Lisa, way back in the day!

Today is my sister’s birthday! Happy birthday Lisa! Hope you’re having a great day celebrating, and sorry for texting you at 2am in honor of when your birthday really starts (if I remembered to do it…if I forgot, then consider yourself lucky)!

We’re hosting some friends this weekend, so I thought I’d leave with a few links to things I am loving on the internet this week!

Friday Favorites: Happy Birthday Edition!

Sorry the list is so short this week. I was busy getting things ready for our houseguests, and prepping for our Labor Day cookout. Speaking of, should I do cheesecake or apple pie? I can’t decide!

Have a great Labor Day weekend!

Happy Friday!

Now that I’m feeling renewed and re-inspired to start blogging on a regular basis, it’s time to bring back the Friday Favorites! Here are a few things around the internet I’ve been digging lately:

Well there you go!

I hope you all have a great weekend! I have a feeling this weekend is going to be a rough one. It’s in the 90s here, and I’m battling some allergy issues – and so is D, which makes him a real dream to be around. My plans right now include hiding in the air conditioning, sleeping in, and lots of ice cream to stay cool!

As I’m sure you can tell from the photo, I’ll be spending my weekend catching up with the Underwoods. I’ve been a huge fan of the show from the beginning, and hopefully I can restrain myself from watching all the episodes this weekend. Since I won’t get another season for a year (or more), I’ve gotta make this one last! Have a great weekend!

Friday Favorites: The End…for now

Friday_Favorites_Holidays

Hello Everyone!

Sorry for the delay – cleaning the apartment yesterday took longer than I expected. It ended in me taking apart our vacuum cleaner. There was so…much…hair in there.

Anyhoo, here are some links I’ve been enjoying around the internet lately! I think this is my last Friday Favorites of the year, so I better make it count, right?

  • So I guess instead of naming their children after characters in Frozen, parents are naming their children after Instagram filters? I guess all the new Ludwigs will fit in nicely with the Olafs out there? Parents are weird. (Apartment Therapy)
  • I tend to get super lazy about cooking after the holidays, probably because the lead up to Christmas is a flurry of baking and high expectations. Goop offers up their favorite one-pan dinners as a nice solution when we’re all feeling like something comforting and easy. That, and doing less dishes is always a good thing! (Goop)
  • Design Sponge did a travel guide for…strangely enough…Toledo, Ohio! They listed a ton of places that I’ve never been before, and a few that were a huge part of my growing up in the area. If you’re from there, but haven’t visited downtown in a while, check it out – it sounds hipster central, but hey, isn’t everywhere now? (Design Sponge)
  • MODG IS BACK!!!!! This was one of my all-time favorite blogs back in the day, and after a bit of a hiatus, she’s back with even more snark, period humor, and brutal honesty that’s sadly missing from blogging these days. Welcome back!
  • If you’re looking for an elegant, simple no-bake cookie recipe for the holidays, House & Home has you covered. They made a beautiful video tutorial on how to make the most indulgent, decadent holiday treat- buckeyes. Yes, chocolate-dipped peanut butter balls. I laughed my way through it, but I also kinda want one now. (House & Home)

Well there you go! I hope you all have a great weekend! I’m trying my best to avoid the Star Wars mania around here (because I am the asshole out there who doesn’t care), shop for new sneakers, and start on that baking/high expectations marathon I mentioned earlier!

Friday Favorites: Welcome to October!

Friday Favorites Welcome to October

Loving all the sunshine this week while out hiking!

Welcome to October!

If September was all about renewed energy and work ethic, October is about building on that while also finding time to get cozy and comfortable. The weather in Seattle through September was unusually warm, so it didn’t feel like fall was coming at all – but this week it has definitely cooled off and feels more autumnal. I also started off October with a cold, so I’m forcing myself to stay home and chill out a bit more. I’m looking forward to the leaves changing color, breaking out my scarves (finally!), and everything pumpkin spiced!

Here are some things I’ve been enjoying this past week:

  • Apartment Therapy reminded us that while the holidays are a few months away, it’s never to soon to start planning. They give amazing advice for those who like giving homemade, handmade, or trendy gifts each year (hint: plan way ahead!).
  • If you wear heels, check out this YouTube video from Chriselle Lim for “5 Heel Hacks” to make sure your feet stay healthy and happy!
  • To make sure you don’t miss this year’s fall foliage, check out the Fall Foliage Map to find out when the peak days for getting out to see the fall leaves!
  • Lenny Letter No. 1 launched this week! Sign up on their website for the newsletter, and enjoy!

Now I’m off to find some spiced doughnuts and apple cider. Have a great weekend!
